Get The Lead Out

The City of East Moline is committed to protecting the health and safety of its residents. We carefully monitor drinking water quality and take proactive steps to reduce contaminants including potential sources of lead exposure. The city’s water continues to meet all state and federal standards when it leaves the Water Filtration Plant.

In East Moline, elevated lead levels are most often linked to older, privately owned lead and galvanized service lines and in-home plumbing. Because these service lines are privately owned, replacing them requires coordination with property owners and cannot be completed all at once.

To address this issue, the City is implementing Get the Lead Out, a city-led program focused on eliminating lead exposure from drinking water associated with privately owned lead and galvanized service lines. The program includes identifying service line materials, prioritizing replacements, securing funding, and coordinating systematic replacement work.

Replacing lead service lines is a multi-year partnership between the city and homeowners. We estimate there are approximately 2,000 privately owned lead service lines in East Moline. So far, 277 have been replaced, and work is underway to complete the remaining replacements by the end of 2028.
